Mr Yemi Candide-Johnson (SAN) is the president of the Lagos Court of Arbitration (LCA), which prides itself as Africa’s premier alternative dispute resolution (ADR) institution. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators of England (FCIArb), an approved tutor and examiner for the UK Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, an honorary Fellow of the Centre for International Legal Studies in Salzburg, Austria, and a supporting member of the London Maritime Arbitration Association. Candide-Johnson was chairman of Lagos State Arbitration Law Reform Committee.

He was a member of the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC), which confers the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) status on lawyers. In this interview with Joseph Jibueze, Candide-Johnson speaks on corruption in the judiciary, resolving political disputes through ADR and how an effective arbitration system can transform the economy.

  1. This is the sad reality: if a country’s judiciary is perceived as corrupt, it is because some in the legal system aid and abate. You get rid of a corrupt judge and it will be replaced by another. Therefore, there is a lot replacing to do from top to bottom, and I am not talking only about a judiciary. Besides, promoting ADR as if it almost were the answer to corrupt judges is hardly the answer. Few would believe it; few believe it. ADR can hardly wash dirt so layered, so hardened, so embedded.
